Buying Research Peptides in Europe

Research peptides are sold across Europe as laboratory chemicals, not medicines, and that status shapes everything from the paperwork in the parcel to the rules in your country. This guide covers what to check before ordering, how delivery works inside and outside the EU, and where medicines law and anti-doping rules draw their lines.

What you are buying

A research peptide arrives as a few milligrams of freeze-dried, or lyophilised, powder in a sealed glass vial. It is sold as a laboratory chemical for cell and animal research, labelled for research use only, and it carries no marketing authorisation as a medicine. That status is more than a line on a label: it decides which rules apply to the sale and what a buyer can expect from the paperwork.

There is no pre-market approval for research chemicals, so quality control rests with two parties. The supplier provides the evidence, a certificate of analysis for each lot. A supplier checklist

Most of what separates a careful supplier from a careless one can be checked before ordering, from the product page and a sample certificate.

  • A lot-specific certificate of analysis. Every production lot should have its own, with an HPLC chromatogram for purity and a mass spectrometry result for identity. One certificate reused for every lot says nothing about your vial.
  • The same lot number on vial and certificate. The number printed on the label must appear on the document. Without that link the chromatogram describes a batch, not necessarily yours.
  • Lyophilised product. Research peptides are normally supplied as freeze-dried powder, which keeps far better than a solution. Premixed liquids raise questions about stability, sterility and preservatives that a certificate rarely answers.
  • Clear research-use labelling. Vials and product pages should state that the material is for research use only. A seller that recommends human doses or claims to treat a condition is presenting a medicine, and under EU law a product presented as treating or preventing disease is a medicinal product whatever its label says.
  • A real contact route. A company name, a postal address and a way to reach a person who can answer a question about a certificate. A shop with nothing but a web form leaves nobody accountable when a lot is wrong.

A supplier that passes all six points has not proved that every vial is perfect. It has given you the means to check.

Shipping inside the EU

The EU is a customs union. Goods in free circulation in one member state move to another without customs declarations or import duties, so a parcel sent from the Netherlands to Germany, Poland or Portugal crosses no customs border: no clearance step, no duty at the door, no customs hold.

Outside the EU: UK, Switzerland, Norway

Once a parcel leaves the EU customs territory it becomes an import. It is declared to customs, it can attract import VAT and duties, and carriers often charge a clearance fee. More important than the cost is that each country applies its own rules on what may be imported at all. Those rules are national, they change, and they can treat a research chemical differently from a medicine. We do not summarise them country by country, because an out-of-date summary is worse than none. Ask the national customs service, and the national medicines regulator for anything that might count as a medicine.

The United Kingdom left the EU customs union when the Brexit transition period ended on 31 December 2020, so parcels from the Netherlands to Great Britain have passed through customs since 1 January 2021; Northern Ireland follows separate arrangements. UK medicines are regulated by the MHRA. Switzerland has never belonged to the EU or the European Economic Area, so parcels clear Swiss customs; Liechtenstein shares the Swiss customs territory, and Swissmedic is the Swiss medicines authority. Norway and Iceland are in the European Economic Area, which brings EU medicines legislation into their national law, but both sit outside the EU customs union, so goods from the EU still clear customs on arrival.

The legal frame in Europe

In the EU a medicinal product may only be placed on the market with a marketing authorisation, granted either centrally, by the European Commission on the recommendation of the European Medicines Agency, or nationally, by a member state agency. The legal definition is broad. A substance counts as a medicinal product if it is presented as treating or preventing disease in people, or if it is used in or given to people to restore, correct or modify physiological functions through a pharmacological, immunological or metabolic action. Research chemicals are sold on the basis that neither limb applies: they are supplied for laboratory work, with no treatment claims and no dosing instructions.

What happens after the sale is largely a national matter. Rules on possession, personal import and use differ from one member state to the next, and some countries act more firmly against particular compounds than others. Some compounds sold for research also exist in authorised form as prescription-only medicines. Semaglutide is authorised in the EU as Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus, and tirzepatide as Mounjaro. The research materials sold as Sema (Semaglutide) 10 mg and Trizzy (Tirzepatide) 10 mg are not those medicines: they carry no marketing authorisation, no patient information and no place in treatment. Rules for athletes

Anyone who competes under the World Anti-Doping Code is bound by the WADA Prohibited List, revised every year and in force from 1 January. Several peptides described on this site appear on it. BPC-157 has been named under S0, non-approved substances, since 2022. Section S2, peptide hormones, growth factors, related substances and mimetics, covers growth hormone secretagogues such as ipamorelin, GHRP-2, GHRP-6 and hexarelin; GHRH analogues such as CJC-1295 and tesamorelin; IGF-1 and its analogues; and thymosin beta-4 and its derivatives, including TB-500. Substances in both sections are prohibited at all times, in and out of competition.

Anti-doping rules work on strict liability. If a prohibited substance is found in a sample, the violation is established without any need to prove intent; how the substance got there can affect the length of a sanction, not the finding. Possession can be a violation in its own right. Testing is carried out by national anti-doping organisations, such as UK Anti-Doping or Germany's NADA, and by international federations; it is not limited to full-time professionals. An athlete with a question should put it to their national anti-doping organisation before handling any of these compounds, not afterwards.

What arrives and what to do next

Research peptides are normally supplied in small glass vials with a rubber stopper and a crimped cap, each holding a white or off-white powder, often as a compact cake or thin film at the bottom. GHK-Cu is the exception: the bound copper makes it blue. Ten milligrams of lyophilised peptide takes up very little space, so a vial that looks nearly empty is usually normal. Three checks are worth making on arrival.

  1. Compare the lot number on each vial with the certificate of analysis for that lot, and file the certificate with your laboratory records.
  2. Check that the seal is intact and the powder is dry. Powder that has turned sticky or glassy may have taken up moisture.
  3. Move the vials to a freezer at −20 °C, in the dark, rather than leaving them on a bench.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay customs duties on an order shipped within the EU? No. Parcels moving between EU member states do not pass through customs, so there is no clearance and no import duty. EU territories outside the EU VAT area are the exception to check.

How long does delivery take? The shop estimates 1–2 business days within the Netherlands and 3–5 business days elsewhere in the EU. Outside the EU, customs clearance adds a delay nobody can predict precisely.

Can I order from the UK, Switzerland or Norway? Shipments to non-EU countries can be subject to import rules, import VAT and duties, and national law decides whether a compound may be imported at all. Check with your customs service and medicines regulator first.
